Smith – Let’s win ‘em all
Tuesday 31st March 2009, 2:11PM BST.
Let’s win them all – that was the bold challenge from AFC Telford United boss Rob Smith ahead of tonight’s trip to Farsley Celtic.
The Bucks have nine Blue Square North games remaining, and Smith believes his squad are now in the frame of mind to take maximum points.
Tonight’s clash is followed by another lengthy journey to Gainsborough on Saturday in what will be the first of five games in just nine days.
The Telford chief accepts his lofty goal is ambitious, but his mood has been boosted by a run of three wins in a week without conceding a goal.
“We want six points off these next two games and then we want to try and win every game to the end of the season,” he declared.
“There’s a real belief in the squad now that we can do that.
“There’s nothing that frightens me in any of the games we have left – it’s a tall order to win nine games, but you never know.
“Out of the nine, we have targeted five that are must-wins and from the other four we’ll see what we can get.”
Farsley are currently languishing in 17th place in the table, having struggled to re-acclimatise since being relegated from the Blue Square Premier last season.
Many of their better players have moved on to be re-united with former boss Lee Sinnott, who is now in charge at Bradford Park Avenue after an unsuccessful stint at Port Vale.
But Smith insists there can be no room for complacency, especially given the Bucks’ less than impressive record against teams in the bottom half of the table.
“Just looking at our results against the lower teams tells you everything you need to know, and it’s going to be a tricky game for us,” he said.
“They need the points badly, but so do we. Hopefully we’ve turned a little corner now.”
