Town did not disappoint
Monday 30th March 2009, 9:33AM BST.
As Town found themselves in front of the Sky cameras on Saturday, they didn’t disappoint and produced one of their best away performances of the season, writes blogger James Pugh.
The 1-1 draw away at high-flying Wycombe was the least Town deserved and if we had been more clinical in front of goal nobody would have had any complaints if we had secured all three points.
The danger with playing in the spotlight on a big stage is that players can sometimes freeze, but if anything it was the home side who struggled to adapt to being watched by a wide audience and the pressure on them going for the title continues to tell.
On the face of it playing one upfront again seemed to be a negative tactic by Mr Simpson, but right from the off we gave it a real go and created numerous chances to win the game. I thought all of the players put in a good performance and we showed some of the attacking flair which we produced earlier in the season.
Once again luck away from home was missing and on another day we could have reproduced a similar score line to the one in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
After going behind we could have so easily let our heads drop, but the boys kept going and showed the kind of fighting spirit that you need to win football matches.
The performance also showed the players are up for the promotion challenge, and if we can produce performances like this until the end of the season, we should at least secure a playoff position.
Next up is a winnable game against Grimsby, before two tricky games against Bury and Rochdale, which could determine if the fans will have something to be celebrating come the end of the season.
On the transfer front, the latest player to leave through the exit door was winger Marc Pugh, who has joined Herefordon loan until the end of the season.
Pugh seems to be a player that Mr Simpson is looking to offload in the summer and getting regular football for Hereford can only do him good. I have always been a fan of Pugh’s – he is an old fashioned winger that will take on players and I don’t think he has been given a fair chance.
It seems strange that he can’t get in a League Two side, but will be given a chance in a League One side, although a relegation threatened one at that. I say good luck to him and hopefully a string of fine performances will make Mr Simpson reconsider.
