Smith sets Bucks a target
Monday 30th March 2009, 1:15PM BST.
Boss Rob Smith has set AFC Telford United a a target of two wins in a week to all-but seal a Blue Square North play-off berth.
The Bucks continued their recent resurgence with a 2-0 victory over Droylsden on Saturday, Andy Brown scoring twice as they secured a third consecutive win without conceding.
Now Smith believes success in their next two outings could be enough to wrap up a top five finish – and still has half-an-eye on a remarkable late title charge.
They head to Farsley Celtic tomorrow evening before travelling across the country to take on Gainsborough Trinity next weekend.
“That result (on Saturday) effectively puts Droylsden out of the equation in terms of catching us, I think,” said the Telford chief.
“We’ve got to go to Farsley and Gainsborough in the next week and if we can get a couple of wins in those then I don’t think we will be far from booking our place in the play-offs.
“It’s Stalybridge and Alfreton that we need to take care of now, and we’ll keep one eye on what’s going on above us as well.
“Gateshead are 12 points ahead but we’ve got four games in hand and you never know. Southport play Tamworth tomorrow and we’ll just gave to see what happens.”
Smith was full of praise for the efforts of his side as they continue what is shaping up to be a gruelling run-in to the end of the season.
The manager was happy with contributions all over the park, picking out several players for special praise.
“People like Stu (Whitehead) and Gav (Cowan) have played a lot of games recently but I thought they were tremendous again,” he said.
“We’re a different side when Andy Brown plays, there’s no doubt about that, and I thought Jon Adams had another sensational game.
“I think James Meredith was excellent as well, and the stalwarts of the team just keep going for me.”
