Pole dancing has become the latest fitness craze as women across the country shake off its sleazy image.

And that’s certainly the case for one group of Shropshire women, who have started their own classes.

Our reporter Abigail Bates has been pole dancing for five months – and she was on hand to show us some of her moves in the fitness studio.

Watch our exclusive video report and find out why pole dancing has become so popular amongst fitness fans.

Filmed by Abigial Bates.

What better way to throw off pole dancing’s sleazy image than filming a video report featuring semi dressed young girls!

pole dancing is an art, girls get to express the femine and sexual side of being God gift to men, women are proud of their bodies no matter size shape, we should show it off all the time…. and waht better why then to dress sexy and show toned curves?????

i love pole dancing it realy does improve your fitness and is fun to do.
Re the comment above , shorts and vests are worn as it helps if you have skin bare on the pole otherwose you would just slip to much. i wouldnt say these girls are semi dressed, ive seen more skin in my nearest swimming pool and in gymnastics classes !

    semi dressed??… Bless you,
It doesn’t take much to get you going, does it !!
Pole dancing is a brilliant way to tone up, increase strength and flexibilty, (and, if you all think we look sexy while we’re at it, well…. that’s a bonus!!)

I am angrey but also find Serotonin’s comment quite disturbing to be honest. Clearly someone who doesn’t exercise and possibly has a dirty mind to boot!

The women in the video are dressed appropriately for their chosen fitness discipline. I fail to see what is sleazy about the video either, the girls are executing skilled moves on the pole, not gyrating against it or making lewd gestures. There is a massive difference between what happens in a pole fitness class and a strip club, it’s a real shame that some people are so blinkered that they can’t see that.

Sonia does a fantastic job and shouldn’t be criticised by the narrowminded!!!

Pole fitness isn’t just a craze and the media need to start recognising that too. I started attending lessons almost 4 years ago and it changed my life – I’m now a qualified fitness instructorm I teach pole fitness in a gym to both men & women.

Eh, so you mean that the mere existance of girls makes them sleazy? Or does it depend on what age they are? Or are they only sleazy if they are wearing trainers and shorts but not if they are wearing trainers and a tennis skirt?

Dude, if the mere image of a woman equals something sexual to you… you need to get your head checked.

If you were to remove the poles and replae them with running machines you wouldnt have made that comment. They are wearing more clothing than some of the women that go to the gym I attend!

It is a form of dance and exercise therefore they are wearing exercise shorts and vests. If they were bra’ with tassle’s on them then fair enough. Maybe you should go to a class before you judge what its like?

In response to Serotonin… Do you expect people doing a fitness class to wear jeans and wooly jumpers? Pole dancing is a great form of exercise which you clearly know nothing about, so in future when you know nothing about a subject…it is better to remain silent!

    ok i’m confused.

you’re saying it’s an exercise and not sleazy and you’re angry that people associate it with anything sexual etc. fair enough.

but then a fellow pole dancer comes on and says “pole dancing is an art, girls get to express their feminine and sexual side”??!

    make your minds up ladies!

Pole dancing is lots of different things to lots of different people. A pole FITNESS class is exactly what it implies, a form of fitness to tone, lose weight and get fit.

Salsa dancing (to name just one) is MUCH more provocative than pole fitness and is done with a partner of the opposite sex, involving close personal contact and provocative moves – this form of dance does not attract the negative comments that pole dance attracts.

As with any form of dance, it is as sexy as you make it. Pole is originally from the strip clubs and that fact cannot be ignored (as is Salsa and other forms of dance) BUT the pole that is becoming common and acceptable today in fitness clubs does not involve g-strings.

Kelly…there is nothing confusing about it if you actually took a class it may help you understand better as well.

Pole dancing like all forms of dance and fitness is an art form. As mentioned above, many forms of dance can be more provocative and so can pole dancing. It can also be very fitness oriented depending on style.

We don’t have to “choose” one way or the other unless we want to and choice is the key word here. There is nothing wrong with a woman who chooses to be in control of her sexuality.

As for seratonin…I wonder if that person even WATCHED the video as they obviously were not semi dressed! I agree with Sonia that person is disturbing if they either find that style of dress provocative or if they made something up just to stir up some controversy.

For many people, pole dancing can be many different things. To me, it’s fitness and a challenge, it’s great when you finally master that move that looks so easy but is actually rather difficult! It’s something which is fun trying to accomplish. I’ve also met some really great people through doing the class.
It’s something a little different that doesn’t need to be sleazy in the slightest! If you want to add the wiggles and wear something more provocative, that’s your own choice, which I must admit I would do if I were on a night out. But in the class, in the gym, it is another form of dancing that shouldn’t be assumed to be sleazy.

Unfortunately people have the wrong idea about pole dancing, last
year after learning about it on a hen weekend i decided to take
classes. Those who know nothing about it may think its young girls
who are semi dressed, but when you understand how athletic it is
then you would change your mind. The reason why women wear shorts
is because you need to get skin contact to allow you to stick to
the pole, And young girls i would be delighted at 36 to called a
young girl. As one of sonias students i have to agree with her that
when you understand the sport you realise what a great way it is to
keep fit and have fun. I certainly dont do it to entertain men, but
it has increased my fitness level and its the only exercise class
that i can honestly say i look forward to goining to. So sleazy it
certainly isnt, i suggest people who think it is have never
attended a class!. If your looking at a great way to keep fit i can
    highly recommend it.

Despite all the protests I still fail to see why ALL the girls in the video seem to be wearing so little?

It seems a bit strange given the reporters claim about poledeance teachers trying to lose its sleazy image?

And as for the comment about Gymnastics, it doesnt have a sleazy image so you really are missing my point.

All I know is when I walk around the Town Centre I see loads of women who could take note of the Government’s Anti-Obesity message and do with some pole dancing.

It should get a NHS subsidy so it does cost so much when I go to watch it.

Pole dancing IS for EVERYONE, & not just ladies! Regards to the clothes, when we dance/spin on the pole we need the surface of our skin to grip, this is why we wear the chosen clothes, or we would just slide and slip right off the pole, making it very dangerous. Serotonin, why don’t you call into see me, I’d be more than happy to give you a quick class and u can try it for yourself. :)

At last someone who has taken the time to explain why such little clothing is needed to pole dance, rather than just accusing me of being a narrow minded misogynist.

Pole dancing for fitness needs articles like these to challenge people’s views. It’s going to take a while to erase the stigma attached to a form of dancing people associate with strip clubs. We need to get the message out there that this form of pole dancing is absolutely not about the enjoyment of men but the benefit of the women taking part.

Laura, I’m with YMD on this one, if the ladies are getting fit, then the guys will appreciate them for it.

They should start pole dancing in schools so the next generation see throught the veneer of sleaze that so wrongly hides the real wood of health and fitness.
