Call-out to beauty spot fires for crews

Saturday 28th March 2009, 11:20AM GMT.

Fire crews were called to four blazes across Shropshire involving undergrowth and gorse, including two in the same beauty spot.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service dealt with two fires which happened within an hour of each other at Catherton Common in south Shropshire last night.

A spokeswoman for the service said the police had not been involved and the fires were not subject to any investigation.

The first fire happened at about 7.31pm at the common, near Crumpsbrook, Cleobury Mortimer, involving up to one hectare of gorse. Two hose reel jets were used to extinguish it.

Crews were called to the common again at 8.41pm but in a different area north of Hopton Bank.

Two pumps and a Pinzgauer vehicle dealt with a fire involving 5,000 square metres of grass and undergrowth. The spokeswoman said a hose reel jet and beaters put it out.

Meanwhile firefighters also tackled another nearby fire which happened close to the entrance to the Quarry, outside Clee village.

A pump from Ludlow was called at about 7.26pm to the fire which was well alight, involving about 15 square metres of gorse and undergrowth.

Earlier a crew from Wellington was called to a fire at about 7.19pm in Hadley Park Road, Leegomery, Telford, involving one square metre of grass and undergrowth.

But it was out on arrival and required no action, a spokeswoman for the fire service said.
