Council approves policy for Quarry

Friday 27th March 2009, 12:00PM GMT.

Fran Healy, who performed at the Quarry Park in Shrewsbury last year with his band Travis.Shrewsbury’s Quarry park could be able to host up to 10 one-day live music events each year after an outdoor music events policy was rubber-stamped by borough councillors.

The new policy is aimed at controlling the number of large-scale events held at the open air venue, while maintaining the quality of concerts such as last year’s Travis and 1980s shows.

It was given the final seal of approval by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council at last night’s final meeting.

Councillor Judith Williams, who helped draw up the proposals, said use of the Quarry for such events would be a matter for the new town council which would inherit the new policy.

She said: “This is something we have given great thought to and something we will honour to the town council.

“Obviously it is not written in tablets of stone and is open to change but we feel that what we have is very manageable.”

Meanwhile by-laws governing the use of the park revised in preparation for the handover of the ground to the new town council were also rubber-stamped last night.

The new by-laws replace those drawn up in 1975 and cover a wider range of circumstances than the old rules.

In particular, they include permission to fly kites, skateboard and play cricket in designated areas.

Does that mean there is now no chance of having small bands play in the quarry. Sounds like only the large, money spinning events will take place. There is enough of that kind of thing at the new theater.

Good idea as long as you protect THE DINGLE
I went to THE FLOWER SHOW in 2007! It was the most dismall I can remember. The Marquees were horrible, with a fairly miserable amount of produce. Bring back the real ones, they were romantic and half the Flower Show experience.
There were too many food outlets and other SALES posts.
As I am disabled I have another complaint. The price to hire a MOBILITY SCOOTER for 6 hrs was a “rip off”. Disabled visitors from abroad are allowed into Museums etc, free in London. The Flower Show should at least have reduced prices as we cannot stay a long time.
If the Mobility hire people want to raise money for more Scooters then they should set up DONNATION BOXS at the ENTRANCES. People are generous enough to drop some coins in. It would be better than OVER CHARGING the DISABLED.
I am pleased people can now play cricket, fly kites and skate-board in the Quarry.
May be BUSKERS could also be allowed?

“Councillor Judith Williams, who helped draw up the proposals”

So in answer to your question Jeff, any small bands caught playing music in the Quarry will be locked-up in ye olde Shrewsbury Gaol for a minimum of 30 years for causing a disturbance to the Councillors.

Hang on but there are small bands who play in the quarry already. There is a whole weekend of activities for the youngsters with up and coming bands. This is called Teenaged Kicks.
This is subsidiesed by the tax payers and part of the summer season of over 100 events in 40 days.
Big bands cost money, putting events on in the quarry cost a lot of money. This is why we tend to get commercial events such as the 80s night.

They had to start with the Shrewsbury Flok Festivel in the quarry but every one complained about that. Too much going on in the quarry.

Typical Shropshire folk always happy to moan and groan and have not got a clue how well off they are.

Good old Judith Williams….stamping out the tiny bit of hope for live music in this town.

The Buttermarket was closed on Friday and in an effort to stage a gig that was pre booked there (Goldie Lookin Chain) several venues were contacted to try put on a gig people of Shrewsbury had already bought tickets for. Theatre Severns answer?
“We don’t cater to that market”

Thank god for the efforts of B-Side Promotions and Lloyds!

Shrewsbury isn’t a town for diversity – it’s a hive of creaky old Councillors and their antiquated views!
