A near three feet long metal rod – weighing 12kg (almost two stone) – is thought to have fallen off the back of a vehicle coming into Wolverhampton along Wergs Road, Tettenhall, on Wednesday about 3.15pm.
Marks on the carriageway suggest that it bounced three times while flying almost 50 feet (15 meters) through the air on the same side of the road before suddenly veering upwards at around 45 degrees into the path of oncoming traffic.
The heavy rod – around four inches wide and up to an inch deep – smashed through the windscreen of a VW Golf travelling out of the city and hit the driver on the head.
The injured driver remained in a critical but stable condition today at Selly Oak Hospital.
Constable Michael Deeming said: “It was travelling like a missile.”
Sergeant Steve Hopkins, from the Road Policing Unit said: “We are studying CCTV of the route to identify any suspect vehicles and would appeal for any drivers of goods vehicles travelling towards Wolverhampton at the time to contact us.”
