Protest call over mine

Thursday 26th March 2009, 6:58PM GMT.

Campaigners fighting a bid to site an opencast mine at a Shropshire beauty spot are to hold a demonstration outside a public inquiry into the plans next month.

Organisers hope at least 50 demonstrators will be outside Grays Hotel in Telford on April 28 when a Government inspector considers the case.

UK Coal has submitted plans to extract 900,000 tonnes of coal, largely destined for Ironbridge Power Station, from a site off Huntington Lane, near Little Wenlock, saying it would make safe an area riddled with old mine workings, create 90 jobs and help meet national demand.
