Plans for historic buildings proposed

Wednesday 25th March 2009, 10:54AM GMT.

A multi-million pound scheme to breathe new life into historic buildings in Whitchurch, creating a top class restaurant and up to 40 new jobs was due to get the go ahead from district planners today.

The project, to transform Victorian and 18th century buildings on the town’s High Street would also see accommodation created and a small shopping centre and a new gateway to allow access to the development.

Councillors on North Shropshire District Council’s development control committee have been recommended by planning officers to approve the plans.

The project, by town businessman Michael White, would see a restaurant created above 36/38 and 40 High Street, and new apartments would be created above the commercial premises at number 34.

More shops would occupy the ground floor of 36/38, and the rest of the shops, and a gateway for access into the development would be built to the rear of the buildings.

A report to go before councillors at the meeting said the scheme should get approval because it would improve the town.

It states: “The provision of a variety of uses will improve the vitality and viability of the town centre whilst also reducing the potential for crime and disorder by improving natural surveillance.”

The meeting was taking place from 2pm at Edinburgh House, New Street, Wem.
