Wynne finally back on a winner – at 66-1!

Tuesday 24th March 2009, 1:05PM GMT.

North Shropshire border trainer Steve Wynne came in from the cold in style at Wolverhampton – with a stunning 66-1 winner.

Shrewsbury’s Mark Brisbourne was also in the winners’ enclosure at Dunstall Park yesterday, but it was Wynne’s re-emergence that stole the limelight.

The handler from Stockton Hall, Malpas, had gone 243 days without a winner, sending out 51 runners in that time. But the wait was ended in dramatic fashion by The London Gang, who beat favourite Obe Royal by half a length in the first division of the 7f claimer – thanks to a forceful ride from Joe Fanning.

“He hadn’t been jumping out of the stalls as well as he could of late, but he had the run of the race yesterday,” said a delighted Wynne today.

“It was a good, positive race and you are always guaranteed one of those with Joe aboard.”

On his long wait for a winner, Wynne added: “We’ve been hitting the goalposts a little bit, we’ve had a few chances and they’ve not quite come off.

“We’ve got a good jumper, Change Agent, who might go to Carlisle on Thursday and he might have a chance, we just need rain. He was a runner-up at Chepstow last week and he’s been looking good at home,” said the former National Hunt jockey.

Fanning completed a 233-1 double on Hatta Diamond (5-2 joint favourite) in the 1m maiden.

Brisbourne’s success, his 11th of the campaign, came when New England took the 1m 4f claimer under Luke Morris. “That puts us ahead of where we were at the same stage a year ago,” said the Nesscliffe-based trainer.

l There will be a racing flavour at Ludlow Town Football Club tomorrow – when Ludlow’s big name trainer Henry Daly is the guest at a special question and answer evening (7.30pm).
