Football club has families award
Tuesday 24th March 2009, 10:55AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town FC has been awarded a special award for the “truly outstanding experience” it provides for young fans and families.
The Football League has given the club a Family Excellence Award for the second year in a row.
And the club could be in for a further accolade after it was shortlisted as one of four teams up for Family Club of the Year for League Two.
It will compete against Bury, Wycombe and Bournemouth for the award, which will be handed out at a ceremony in London on Sunday.
Jon Harris, general manager of the club, today welcomed the achievement of securing an excellence award as a “great honour”.
He said: “It’s great for the club and recognises that we are moving forward and that we are not going to sit on our laurels.”
A total of 41 clubs received the award, which is based on an independent assessment of the family experience at all 72 League clubs, commissioned by The Football League, during the 2008/09 season.
Mark Bradley, who runs the initiative for the Football League and visited Shrewsbury Town as a home and away fan, said: “The kids really enjoyed the experience and would pester us to go back.
“From my perspective we experienced a club that’s aware of what it’s offering and understands the needs of its different types of fans.
“The difference in visiting the Gay Meadow a few years ago and coming to the Prostar was incredible.”
