Driver in court over death of boy, 9

Tuesday 24th March 2009, 1:50PM GMT.

A man has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a nine-year-old boy from the Shropshire border.

David James Lunn appeared at Mold Magistrates Court today.

Lunn is charged with causing the death of Robert James Gaunt while using an uninsured vehicle at Overton-on-Dee on March 19.

The 61-year-old, of Moorland Avenue, Queens Park, Wrexham, is also charged with causing the boy’s death while driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

He is also charged with failing to stop and failing to report an accident, two charges of driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, perverting the course of justice and two offences of driving without insurance.

Wearing a blue sweatshirt and navy blue trousers Lunn spoke only to confirm he understood the charges during the 10 minute hearing.

Lunn entered no pleas and was remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned to Mold Crown Court on April 3.

Robert Gaunt, from Overton, near Ellesmere, suffered head injuries and multiple fractures when he was hit by two cars near his home last Thursday.

The schoolboy died at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool on Saturday morning.

It is believed he was either riding or pushing a bicycle on the A539 Overton Road near Erbistock when he was struck by the first car.
