Still hope despite stalemate

Shrewsbury Town v MorcambeTown remain firmly in the promotion hunt despite having to settle for a stalemate against an in-form Morecambe side, writes our Shrews Blogger, James Pugh.

A rare 0-0score line at the Prostar was not ideal, but with other results going our way elsewhere we remain in the play-off places.

We were far from our best, didn’t create too many chances, and the result means that our hardest work is yet to be done with games against Wycombe, Bury and Rochdale coming up.

Credit must go to Morecambe who made things difficult for us and they showed the kind of performance that has meant they have been unbeaten in 12 games. And yet again this season two former players of ours, Artell and Drummond were very impressive.

It was nice to see Simpson show some ambition and start with Humphreys and play with two strikers, but even this did not pay off and apart from a couple of chances for Holt and Humphreys and a couple of penalty shouts, we never really looked like breaking down a resolute Morecambe side.

Saturday’s result showed that Town are not going to do things the easy way in the run up until the end of the season and we are going to have to expect there will be many twists and turns. It is simple – if we are serious about promotion then we have got to show more ambition away from home and not rely on winning every game at the Prostar.

It will be easy for Simpson to have the mindset that picking up one point against teams like Wycombe, Bury and Rochdale will do, but I don’t think this will be enough and ideally we don’t want to have to go into the last game away at Dagenham needing three points.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Kelvin Langmead for achieving 200 appearances for Town, which is a rare thing at this level of football. When he first signed for the club, very few people had heard of him and as a striker he rarely impressed.

However, now that he has found his best position as a centre half he has been Mr Consistent and has been one of our best players in recent years. He is a young player who will only get better and the challenge we will face is trying to keep hold of him, especially if we fail to get promoted.

On Friday news broke that Michael Symes had joined Accrington on a months loan. Hopefully he will be able to get some games and goals under his belt, but I think it is more of a case of putting his name in the shop window because undoubtedly he is one of many players Simpson is looking to get rid of at the end of the season.

Can we please refer to the manager as Paul Simpson please? It is disrepectful to just refer to people by their surnames.

Was it noticed that the loan of Michael Symes enabled Accrington to loan out Paul Mullin to Bradford City for the rest of the season. What a pity we could not have done the deal. Not only has this strengthened Bradford’s chances but the capture of such an experienced and effective striker would have greatly enhanced our prospects. I wonder if we even attempted to make the loan!

Thanks for the unintentionally funny comment from devon. This close to the end of the season you would expect any half decent team to be hoping for more than their SECOND away win! Must be about six months now without an away win. Hang your heads in shame townies!
