Roots

nav20_print_lauLau: Arc Light (Navigator)

The winners of best group at both the 2008 and 2009 BBC Folk Awards have generated fervent anticipation for this new album.

They more than live up to the hype.

Lau are this generation’s most creative and genre-busting combo who have a sense of invention, creativity and fire that few can match.

Their explosive roots tunes have deservedly generated a buzz around the UK and Arc Light perfectly captures their brilliant sense of adventure, style and fun.

Folk

Benjamin Taylor: The Legend of Kung Folk (Iris)

Deft acoustic guitar playing, insightful lyrics and stunning, standout melodies characterise this third release from Benjamin Taylor.

His work has improved with each release as he continues to learn his craft.

This is a huge step forward from his debut, Famous Among Barns, and the sublime follow-up Another Run Around The Sun.

Taylor, like his father James, has a knack of writing exceptionally good songs.

This contains plenty of them.

Pop

RoyskoppRoyksopp: Junior (Wall Of Sound)

Norweigian duo Royksopp described making their new album Junior as “like mining in the mountains”.

It certainly has an impressive boldness and energy.

Following their massive million-selling debut Meloday AM and the acclaimed follow-up The Understanding, this is an impressively lively and direct masterpiece from Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland.

It’s as pop should be; devoid of cliche and brimming with effervescent musical motifs.
