The first revenue-earning train was due to roll into Shropshire’s new £9 million International Railfreight Terminal today.

So thats why there was a truckload of train spotters on the side of the road when I passed this morning !

Collective noun for trainspotters – surely it would be an ‘anorak’ or perhaps a ‘thermos’ of…

So what is the collective noun for a group of carspotters? A far larger group these days. A Clarkson?

And they weren’t camera-toting terrorists.
The hobby is not odd but is normal, common and lawful. Unfortunately chief police officers and their constables don’t understand that.

“The hobby is not odd but is normal, common and lawful”, what do we judge ‘normal’ against? Perhaps GSS hasn’t considered that the cargo of the train may in someway be covered by the Official Secrets Act? Just a thought…..

Could someone explain to myself the joy of trainspotting? Please

Why should anyone have to explain joys of anything they do if they don’t effect others.?
Just accept there’s people who might just think differently to you. Seems people have forgotten thats an option in the UK. (for now!). Defend others interests whether you understand them or not. If you don’t one day – yours might be banned. Have a nice day. :-)

Here here Devilschair.
People have many hobbys, from trainspotting to painting to Stobart spotting, to bird watching and gardening, to vintage cars and buses. How are any of these harmful? Most would seem odd to the others but we should ‘live and let live’ and defend our rights to have a hobby. Big Brother can easily restrict bird watching under the same premise they now seem to restrict trainspotters and whats next – internet use being monitored – ohh sorry, it already is!

could you explain the joy of pathetic sniping at perfectly harmless hobbyists?

we should all be using the train more, trains are brilliant, they offer a low carbon solution for getting from town centre to town centre with no congestion and high speeds and comfort of travel, i would remove all subsidies for air craft in the UK and plough it all into rail, that would be the best thing for the economy and the environment this government could do
Report abuse
waste of tax payers money, i only go by car, where is my subsidy? Labour taxes motorists too much to pay for silly social projects like trains
get them out and get in your car

Who knows, it could have been the papperazi!

TB your car driving is costing us money in terms of health and pollution, the train is worth subsidising because tis a public good creates more good than harm boosts the economy and protects communities and ecology

ToryBoy is a troll for this site – it says things to wind people up, it often sys the opposite things over a period of time and has not use beyond getting people to think about how they say things and defend them.
Once you know this – you know it wont actually put anything useful or within the bounds of reality into a discussion. .ignore.

this will keep HGVs off the road and out of towns so its a good investment in protecting wear and tear on the roads and improving air quality in our towns, a win, win for all, which any sensible person would welcome

Two things here.
JD, do you have supporting information for your statement that car driving costs us in terms of health and pollution?
DevilsChair, I’m a moderator on a discussion forum and your comment #18 would get you binned for ad hominem, and disregarding the subject in question for a cheap attack on the commenter. Very poor form, pal.
