Eisteddfod attracts crowd of thousands
Monday 23rd March 2009, 10:29AM GMT.
The sound of music filled a Shropshire village hall as thousands of people turned out for the 47th Minsterley Eisteddfod.
People of all ages showed off their talents at Minsterley Village Hall on Saturday with more than 400 entries across 30 different classes.
Solo singers and groups performed for the judges, in addition to instrumentalists, literature recitations and classes focusing on the written word.

Lesley Holder, of the eisteddfod committee, said: “We had a fantastic day, we certainly had hundreds of people there competing and in the audience.
“We had a very very successful day. Over the whole weekend, including last night’s concert, we believe we had about 3,000 people.”
Mrs Holder said one of the most successful events was the choir competition on Saturday evening which saw three choirs gaining heaps of praise.
Of One Accord scooped first prize with Quindici taking second and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir third.
Mrs Holder said: “There were children’s choirs in the afternoon and first prize went to The British School of Amsterdam, who joined us for the second year, so we have gone international.”
The crowds also loved the popular singing which saw a winning group from Pontesbury Primary School performing an ‘Oliver’ medley dressed up in Oliver-style clothing for the performance.
This year, organisers introduced an instrumental bursary of £250 for musical development, which was awarded to guitarist Jack Hancher, who the adjudicators felt showed potential.
