Arsonists are blamed for blaze at flat
Monday 23rd March 2009, 10:51AM GMT.
Arsonists targeted a Shrewsbury flat risking the lives of people in the building and causing £5,000 damage, police said today.
The fire at the flat, part of a block in The Ridings, Gains Park, broke out between about 9pm and 9.20pm on Saturday.
Detective Constable Alex Sullivan, of Shrewsbury CID, said police believed the fire was started deliberately.
Police were called just before 9.20pm by the fire service, which was already in attendance when officers arrived.
Detective Sullivan said: “Nobody was inside the flat at the time the blaze broke out but this is a very serious incident which could very well have resulted in loss of life.
“Although the occupant of the flat was not at home, other people in the building were at home and if the fire had spread, the result could have been significantly worse.
“At present, the premises is subject to a detailed investigation by both the police and the fire service. The exact cause of the fire is unknown but it is thought to have been started deliberately and police are treating it as a criminal investigation.
Witnesses should contact police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
