Promotion heroes in Prostar honour

shrewsnewlogotm6Shrewsbury Town’s promotion heroes of yesteryear are set to be recognised on a special night of nostalgia.

Supporters group Super Blues and ShrewsTrust are joining forces to arrange an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the club’s promotion to the second tier of English football in 1978-9.

The event will be staged in the Sovereign Lounge at the Prostar Stadium on Sunday, May 17 – exactly 30 years after Town defeated Exeter 4-1 in front of 14,441 at Gay Meadow to clinch the division three title.

Organisers are hopeful player-manager of the time Graham Turner will attend, and are planning to invite the previous two bosses Alan Durban and Richie Barker.

The entire squad will be invited, including Jake King, Paul Maguire, Steve Cross, Steve Biggins, Ian Atkins, Ken Mulhearn and Colin Griffin.

It is also hoped that some members of the 1958-59 squad which won promotion from division four will attend 50 years on.

“It is been in our minds for a while to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1979 promotion,” said Super Blues spokesman Chris Smith.

“Going into the Championship as it is now was a massive moment for the club and the night of the Exeter game is one fans from that era still remember very fondly.

“It’s nice that we can combine with marking 50 years since the promotion of the 58-59 squad, and hopefully it will be a triple celebration after promotion this season.”

Tickets for the event will cost £10 to include a buffet and will initially go on sale to members of Super Blues and ShrewsTrust shortly.

Any remaining tickets will then go on general sale.
