Fifth man charged over bank raid

Saturday 21st March 2009, 11:08AM GMT.

A fifth man has been charged in connection with a raid on a Shropshire bank in which £425,000 was stolen, detectives said today.

The 25-year-old is from the Salford area of Manchester.

He was questioned by detectives at Malinsgate Police Station yesterday.

Last night he was charged with conspiring to rob Lloyds TSB in Dawley High Street, Telford, in September last year.

He is due to appear before Telford Magistrates Court today.

Five others, Colin Farrell, Brian Moran, David Dargan, and Paul Fielding, all in their 20s and also from Salford, Manchester, have also been charged with conspiring to rob the High Street branch.

All five have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before Shrewsbury Crown Court next month.

The court has previously heard how a gang of five masked men raided the town’s branch on September 5, armed with sledgehammers, crowbars and drain covers.

Two women working at the bank were filling up the cash machine at the time of the robbery.

The prosecution claim the men – all wearing identical clothing and balaclavas – fled with boxes and bags of cash containing about £425,000.

The gang allegedly fled in a Volkswagen Golf, which was found abandoned along with a Volkswagen Caddy.

The bank has since closed the branch for the safety of their customers and staff because of security fears following the raid.
