Boot sale diversion planned
Saturday 21st March 2009, 11:58AM GMT.
Thousands of motorists attending a car boot sale near Oswestry are to be diverted through Chirk to help ease the pressure on the major A483 trunk road.
The sale, held on Sundays and some bank holiday Mondays alongside the A5 at Halton, has proven so popular that action has been taken to reduce congestion.
After consulting police and event organisers, council officials have agreed to run a trial one-way system in the run up to, and including the Easter bank holiday weekend.
The move has been welcomed by landowner, Chirk town councillor John Pierce.
“It will improve tourism for Chirk Castle, the Glyn Valley Tramway Trust and bring a lot of business back into Chirk,” he said.
Geraint Jones, network manager at Wrexham County Borough Council, said police had agreed to trial a one-way system.
“This will involve directing all traffic attending the event via the bottom of Black Park Road and along Park Lane and entering the field at the top end,” said Mr Jones.
“Traffic exiting the event will be directed right out of the gate on to Black Park Road.
“It is hoped that this will reduce queueing traffic on the A483 and allow more stacking area for traffic attending the event, along these roads.
“The trial will take place on March 29 and April 5, 12 and 13.”
