Relaxed Bucks can roar – Smith
Friday 20th March 2009, 11:27AM GMT.
Boss Rob Smith will send AFC Telford United out on a mission to cause an FA Trophy sensation at York tomorrow, insisting: “We’ve got nothing to lose.”
The Bucks go into the semi-final second leg trailing 2-0 and needing to produce a stirring comeback to seal their passage to Wembley.
Smith has also bolstered his squad with the signing of Leicester City striker Ricky Sappleton – though the 19-year-old is not eligible to line-up against the Minstermen.
His arrival does make it more likely that key forward Andy Brown will be involved, despite his ongoing Achilles problem, but that will not signal a policy of all-out attack.
“We don’t want to concede another goal, we want to keep it tight and even if it’s 0-0 at half-time the game’s not over,” said Smith.
“We won’t be going gung-ho because that would be kamikaze and could back-fire on us.
“We’re desperate to finish the job and it’s unfortunate that we’ve given ourselves a bit of a hill to climb but we’ll give it our best shot.
“The players are ready and we’ve got nothing to lose, there’s no pressure on us at all now. We’ll be relaxed, and sometimes you can play your best football when it’s like that.”
Smith rates leading scorer Danny Carey-Bertram’s chances of being involved as being no greater than 50/50 due to a hamstring injury.
But right-back Lee Vaughan is available again after completing a three-game suspension, with Telford having lost all the games he has had to sit out.
“We’ve lost other games without him this season as well,” added Smith. “He’s got his faults but we don’t half miss him when he’s out.”
Meanwhile, Smith declared his delight at being able to bring in Sappleton, who has also had loan spells this season with Bournemouth and Oxford.
“He fits the bill of being the Andy Brown physical type of player up front that we need,” he said.
“We enquired about him a while ago but he was away with the Jamaica under-20s and we wanted to wait until he got back and see if it would be possible to get him rather than being panicked into getting someone else.
“He’s very highly-rated by Leicester and we’re grateful to their manager Nigel Pearson and his No 2 Craig Shakespeare.”
