Householders in talks over parking row

Friday 20th March 2009, 10:17AM GMT.

Angry Shrewsbury residents will hold talks with a college principal and a highways official after complaining that students and commuters are parking indiscriminately outside their homes.

People living in the Copthorne Drive area say they are becoming increasingly fed up with vehicles blocking their driveways and preventing them parking outside their homes throughout the day.

A meeting has now been arranged for next week which will be attended by residents as well as Martin Ward, principal of Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, and an official from Shropshire County Council.

Councillor Judith Williams said: “The residents of Copthorne Drive are becoming increasingly angry about the parking of commuters and students in their drive.

“Many houses do not have off-street car parking and after 9am they are unable to park anywhere near their homes. Students have often blocked driveways, obstructing access and egress for residents, and nurses attending the old and sick are also unable to park near their patients.”

She is now calling on the council to introduce a residents’ parking scheme to alleviate the problems.

A college spokeswoman said the meeting at 7pm on Wednesday at The Darwin Community Centre in Frankwell had been called in a bid to find out more about the concerns.

Martin Allard, head of traffic and safety at Shropshire County Council, said: “An officer will be attending.”
