Fans can lift Town bid – Simpson

Friday 20th March 2009, 11:19AM GMT.

Shrewsbury Town manager Paul SimpsonBoss Paul Simpson is urging the Shrewsbury fans to rally to the cause as Town step up their promotion charge at home to Morecambe tomorrow.

The Shrimpers will arrive at the Prostar Stadium as the form team in League Two, but Simpson believes a large and vocal support could make the difference.

Confidence in the Town camp has also been boosted by the way they came from two goals down to draw at Gillingham last Saturday.

“We’ve got four home games left and we want as many people as possible to turn up and back us,” the Town chief declared.

“That will benefit us financially as a club that is going for it but, most importantly, we know they’ll come and get behind us.

“The players normally respond to that type of support and hopefully that will be the case this weekend.

“I was delighted by the way they came back at Gillingham last week – we’ve been asking for that for many, many away games and they showed what I always knew was in there.

“They’ve set a standard now, and we need to see that for these next eight games. If they do that, we won’t go far wrong.”

Simpson is wary of the Morecambe threat and has been impressed by the way Sammy McIlroy’s side have surged up the table since the turn of the year.

“They’re working a system that’s proving really effective for them,” he said.

“They’ve got a fairly settled side and they’re definitely the form team in the league so it’s going to be a tough game.

“For me that’s good because no-one can turn up thinking it’s going to be a foregone conclusion.

“Once the game settles down, hopefully our ability will shine through.”

Town have a near full strength squad available for tomorrow’s clash, with long term injury victims Kevin McIntyre and Mike Jackson the only notable absentees.

Defender Kelvin Langmead will notch up his 200th Town appearance if he plays.
