Bucks call on spirit of 1983

bucks-logo1You CAN do this – and we are the proof!

That is the message from Telford United legend Kevin Charlton as the Bucks look to re-create the most famous comeback in FA Trophy history.

It is 26 years since Telford went to Harrow Borough in a semi-final second leg trailing 2-0 from the tie at their own ground.

Despite conceding again just six minutes in, they fought back in heroic fashion to eventually win 5-3 after extra-time.

Goalkeeper Charlton had the perfect view of that incredible day, and he sees no reason why the class of 2009 can not do exactly the same thing to York City tomorrow.

“As Antone told us all those years ago: ‘It’s only half-time,’” said Charlton, recalling the short and sweet message that was delivered by irrepressible midfielder Antone Joseph.

“We were all in the changing room with our heads down after the game at the Bucks Head and he came striding in and said: ‘Let’s just have a shower and we’ll sort it out next week.’

“York are in the Conference Premier and that’s where Telford aspire to be. I’ve seen Telford play and they’re good enough to get out of the league they’re in – and I’m sure they’ve got the talent and dedication to beat York as well.

“Everyone in York will think they are through already, but that means Telford can relax and enjoy it.”

That Harrow victory is one that is still talked about in hushed tones by Telford fans who were lucky enough to be there and see it with their own eyes.

From a situation where they looked dead and buried, they were back in the contest when Dave Mather got on the scoresheet before Colin Williams took over.

The prolific hitman, a day shy of his 27th birthday, got one goal in each half to take the tie to extra-time then added another two to seal a remarkable win.

“We knew we had a good side and we knew we could score,” recalled Charlton, who was inducted into the Telford Hall Of Fame earlier this season.

“Once we got one, the floodgates opened and it was just amazing.

“We had such amazing support down there and we couldn’t let them down, it felt like there were thousands of them.

“I remember Dave Mather was laughing to himself when we got the third goal, he was just giggling on the pitch because we could feel we were going to get to Wembley.”

There will be laughter aplenty – and doubtless a few tears of joy, too – if history can repeat itself tomorrow.
