Ams aim to clear big hurdle in title race
Friday 20th March 2009, 10:45AM GMT.
Wellington Amateurs will be hoping to put one hand on the West Midlands League division one championship trophy tomorrow – with victory in the “biggest game of our season”.
Leaders Amateurs travel to second placed Bilbrook knowing a victory will stretch their already healthy advantage at the top of the table even further.
On the flip side of the coin, Bilbrook could close to within two points of them with a win and a maximum return from their three matches in hand.
“It’s a massive game and probably the biggest of our season,” said manager Mike Armstrong.
“We have had back-to-back promotions and we don’t want to stop now.
“It’s imperative we get promoted and the way to guarantee that is by winning the league.
“We can’t lose the league tomorrow but we could go a long way towards winning it.
“We were in a very strong position a few weeks ago and then injuries and suspensions have brought us back into a bit of a fight for it.
“If we win tomorrow, it will put us back into that very strong position.”
Bridgnorth Town Reserves will have to do without skipper Olly Brown for the trip to Stafford Town.
Brown, who dislocated his thumb in Tuesday’s victory over Shenstone Pathfinder, has been given the afternoon off as he is running the Ironbridge Half Marathon on Sunday.
It’s League Cup day in division two with Hanwood playing host to Black Country Rangers in the quarter-finals.
Fifth-placed Ellesmere Rangers host Pelsall Villa in the premier division, with manager Matt Burton anxious to build on the feel-good factor around the club after 13 victories in the last 15 games.
“There is a great atmosphere around the place from everybody through to the kit man and the groundsman,” said Burton.
“We may have a bit too much to do in terms of winning the league but you never know – we just have to keep going.”
Ludlow Town will be keen to continue their push for results to erase any lingering relegation fears at Lye.
Six points currently separate Ludlow from the bottom three but recent form suggests the SBS Stadium men will draw clear of the danger zone.
They will have to cope without Jamie Russell and Simon Newhill tomorrow.
Shawbury United remain safely embedded in mid-table and entertain Tividale tomorrow.
