York boss has plan to outdo Telford

bucks-logo1York City boss Martin Foyle has a pace plan to accelerate past AFC Telford United into the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

The Minstermen are in pole position going into Saturday’s semi-final second leg at Kit-Kat Crescent, having won 2-0 at the New Bucks Head last weekend.

Foyle refuses to accept the game is all ready signed and sealed – especially with Telford hoping to welcome back key defender Lee Vaughan from suspension, as well as injured leading striker Danny Carey-Bertram.

But the former Port Vale chief hopes Onome Sodje will prove his not-so-secret weapon.

The jet-heeled striker caused problems as a substitute against the Bucks last weekend and scored as York came from behind to draw with Forest Green in the Blue Square Premier on Saturday.

“I’ve been in similar situations enough times to know the tie’s not over and their better players like Carey-Bertram and Vaughan will be back,” said Foyle.

“We will be in for a game, don’t worry about that, but we will be ready.

“Sodje’s got pace and that’s something I’m looking at for the second leg, because I know their full-backs Vaughan and (James) Meredith will push forward.

“Sodje’s a big part of my plans because I feel we can get around the two centre-halves.

“We’re decent at home but I know Telford have got to come at us, so it’s a case of defending at times but, also, the word counter-attack is going to come into it.”

York scored in each half last Saturday, the first coming from the boot of Simon Rusk off a well-worked corner routine.

Foyle put that down to the diligent preparation he put in ahead of the tie.

“It was pre-planned and that’s why me and Andy Porter (his assistant) did our homework,” he added.

“I think they were worried about our height a little bit, with all the bodies going into the box, so we thought we’d try a short one.

“On the training ground the day before the game it didn’t work at all but on matchday it did. Hopefully we can see the job through, now.”
