Theatre signs set to be replaced

Thursday 19th March 2009, 6:30PM GMT.

shrews-theatre-severnSigns at Shrewsbury’s new multi-million pound riverside theatre are to be replaced just weeks after being put up because nobody can see them – but the new signs will not be up in time for the royal opening.

Two of the light-grey coloured signs bearing the name Theatre Severn and a logo will be changed to make them stand out more following complaints from members of the public.

Councillor Charles Armstrong, portfolio holder for leisure and culture at Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, said council chiefs were also unhappy with the finish, claiming it had been a mistake on the part of the contractors.

He said the signs would be altered by Willmott Dixon at the company’s expense. Councillor Armstrong said the work would not take place until after the official opening of the £28 million venue by the Earl of Wessex on Wednesday.

Councillor Armstrong said: “They have made a mistake when they put it up and they need to be changed. It will be the same design but you will actually be able to read it.”

Harry Dhanjal, from Willmott Dixon, said: “Basically we looked at the design and the colour as specified by the architect and put it on images and everyone thought the contrast was fine.

“But when we put it up against the background of the building it didn’t work. It’s just a decision that didn’t work out.”

How much did the old sign cost? How much is the new sign going to cost? Just spray paint the original one black and put it back! I can find a local teenager to do it for free!

oh my god, can this white elephant vanity project by SABC be any more of a drain on tax payers of Shropshire!? What a waste of money the whole thing is and in a recession too, shame on them

Personally I thought the logo was fine. It was the building that ‘didn’t work out.’

If any of you learned to read at school you’d see it was being replaced at the contractors expense.

Get off the back of this great public investment.

Read the article dimwits. It clearly states the new signs will be paid for by the contractor.

I do hope they put some more visible temporary signs. It would be just too awful if the Earl of Wessex was to turn up on his bike a few minutes early and open the wrong building….

Can’t believe the attitude of some people. If you don’t like the theatre then don’t go, no one is forcing u. I happen to think the design of the new building is stunning. It’s the reluctant to change attitude from some of the people above that is turning shrewsbury into a ghost town by cinstantly objecting to new development. With the country in recession it’s fantastic to see jobs created and an already booked up year of performance.

The whingers contributing to this debate are probably the same sad old souls that complain the world is passing Shrewsbury by.

The investment in this facility is long overdue and is welcome. I don’t know what the payback period is but I hope that the management continue to attract the events and performances that are on par with those filling the current schedule. I assume that the Music Hall has paid for itself many times over the years – unfortunately it is now past its sell by date.

For those that believe that this investment is inappropriate in a recession, just think about what you are saying. Firstly, the development was planned and approved before this ‘recession’ was with us. Also, the theatre will attract people into the town and many of us will make use of the pubs and restaurants – supporting local business!

Now if the whingers would like to go back to sipping their halves of mild in the corner, the rest of us will get on with enjoying ourselves.

And as for this recession, now don’t get me started….
