Fog sees drivers crawl to work

Thursday 19th March 2009, 9:24AM GMT.

Motorists in Shropshire and Mid Wales had a slow crawl to work today after yesterday’s sunshine was replaced by a peasouper fog.

Visibility was down to just a few yards in places and police warned drivers to take extra care.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said temperatures had reached 13C (55F) yesterday after the early mist was burnt away by the sun.

“Thermometers dropped to 1C (34F) overnight and with the absence of wind, the moisture in the air condensed and formed fog,” he said.

“It’s quite unusual for this time of year. We normally associate this type of fog with November.”

Mr Warner said the weather would remain dry, settled and more cloudy through the weekend, with daytime temperatures of 10 or 11C (50/52F).

“But it looks like we will get cold air from the Arctic by Wednesday, bringing unsettled weather and some sleet.”
