Service to mark end of council

Wednesday 18th March 2009, 2:28PM GMT.

guildhall-2Final arrangements are being put in place for a celebration of the life of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.

A final civic service will be held at St Chad’s Church on Monday at 12.30pm to mark the life of the authority from 1974 to 2009.

The service is open to present and former staff.

On the day, the mayor, together with a number of former mayors, other dignitaries, councillors and council staff will be taking part in a parade from the Guildhall at noon to the church via the Welsh Bridge, Barker Street and Claremont Bank.

Although it will be necessary to close a number of roads for a short period, it is intended they will be opened again once the civic procession has passed.

Mayor Councillor Anne Chebsey said the borough’s former members and staff were welcome to attend. The council will cease to exist on March 31 before a new unitary authority takes over.
