Market Drayton in 1926 – in colour

Wednesday 18th March 2009, 12:01PM GMT.

Fascinating colour footage of Market Drayton in the 1920s has been posted on the website YouTube.

The colour film – extremely rare 80 years ago – comes from a documentary film called The Open Road, which was made by Claude Friese-Greene in 1925/6.

His documentary filmed the route from Land’s End to John O’Groats and presented it as a series of picture postcards. The result is a snapshot of a Britain long since vanished.

The Market Drayton footage, which is sadly only a few seconds long, shows a thriving post-war town, with well-tended streets, no litter, and busy shops.

The Open Road has now been restored by the British Film Institute National Archive and is available to buy on DVD. For further details click here.
