Courage and bravery in her final days

Wednesday 18th March 2009, 8:20AM GMT.

jade goodyNo matter how you feel about Jade Goody – the mouthy reality television star, whose often stupid comments have stunned the world – you have to admire her courage and extreme bravery as she deals with her terminal cancer.

Before her diagnosis of cancer of the cervix, I would never have suggested the mother-of-two as a role model.

But facing the worse possible news, Jade has stepped up and dealt with her fate more bravely than I can ever imagine.

Just like any mother at the forefront of her mind are her two young boys.

These two little boys, Bobby, five, and Freddy, four, are facing a long hard struggle when Jade is laid to rest.

Now Jade is doing all she can now to prepare the youngsters for a future without the loving help of a mother- which is often taken for granted.

Even though she has been criticised for showing intimate details of her struggle with her disease on television and living through the newspapers, I cannot fault her. She is doing it to raise funds to help look after her boys in the future.

Jade first became known through Big Brother so it is hardly unusual that she would look to reality television to support her through her last struggle.

On Big Brother, she quickly became a national figure of fun for appearing naked and asking questions such as “is east Angular abroad?” and “Rio de Janeiro, ain’t that a person?”

But the 27-year-old has come a long way since then – she has grown up and become a woman, a mother and a wife.

Jade has recently said she can look back and be proud of what she has done, saying “I’ve achieved more in 27 years than some achieve in their lifetime.”

And her legacy will continue long into the future – many clinics up and down the country are reporting an increase in women going to have their smear tests – known as ‘the Jade effect’.

If Jade’s illness saves one women’s life, she will have made an enormous difference.

But despite Jade being diagnosed with terminal cancer, the age restriction on smears show no sign of being reduced and is still set at 25 years old.

Her struggle has highlighted the importance of lowering the cancer smear test age to 18 years.

At the moment cervical cancer screening starts at 25 in England, compared to 20 in Scotland and Wales.

It is the second most common cancer in women under 35 years old after breast cancer, but the vast majority of cases still occur in older women.

Around 3,000 women are diagnosed with the disease each year in the UK and the prognosis is good if it is caught early.

Now according to reports, demand for smears is up by a fifth in some areas since Goody was diagnosed.

Jade has been told she has only weeks to live but she has used them to the best advantage – she has got married and christened with her two young boys.

With Mother’s Day on Sunday, she is an inspiration to mothers across the country.

Mother’s Day is all about thanking our mothers for their help and showing them how much they are appreciated.

And for Jade, it will be one last year with her sons.

She could be bitter about how unfair it is she was only given 27 years of life but she is preparing to die with dignity and honour and can only be admired.

As a mother, her right to see her children grow up and become men has been denied. She will not be able to watch as they get married and have children of their own and nor will she be able to carry out the mundane daily tasks of looking after them.

No matter your thoughts on how Jade has conducted her life, she is a tremendous example to all of us.

While I admire Jade as being brave I do feel she has been unfairly exploited by the media both in the past 3 months and during her love/hate phase with the media

The Rebecca Lawrence article makes me angry, yes it is correct that what has happened to Jade Goody is very sad, BUT she ignored the warnings and I believe did not follow up quickly the results from 3 tests I believe, she was more interested in making money, so the situation she finds herself in has not been helped by herself.

Y Mab Darogan – wise up, she has not been exploited by the press SHE has exploited the press to make as much money as possible for herself.

I’m sorry, cancer is awful and lets face it we are all going to die sometime. But Jade Goody is just a random person plucked from the crowd for no other reason than for people to gaze at like an animal in a zoo. Enter Max Clifford and the job is complete, mental chewing gum to distract us from questioning what is really going on. The media tsunami is on the horizon.

Breezey – I would say she was exploited by the Press the media build people up only then to to knock them down.

It sells papers which is the sole intention of the tabloid media not the shropshire Star I may add.

    Consider

    Paul Gascoigne
    David Beckham
    Jade Goody
    Tony Blair
    etc etc etc

all built up by the tabloid media to the best thing since sliced bread and then gleefully tore to pieces when required

Y Mab Darogan, you are correct to a certain degree, but many of the people that you list love the spot light so that they can make lots of money.

Jade could be going through this sad time outside of the glare from teh press, but she chose to sell her story and make lots of money.

And what the hell have you got Tony Blair on the list for, he is loving the press and the publicity, it helps him to make millions of pounds, when in fact his record needs to be very carefully examined since much of the mess we are in is equally his fault as much as Brown’s

It’s not about anything! It’s about humanity, and the pure maternal instinct. SO WHAT! if she didn’t follow up tests? How many of you have ignored niggling aches and pains/ How many of you have not made a will or sorted out a pension?? I for one have done neither. WHY? because we never think it’s going to happen to US!! I have spoken to SO MANY young women who have ALL said they would have done the same. Jade was making money, she was on a role and fair play to her! Media or no media. Point is, she is who she is, she pretended to be nothing more and you all know it. Jelousy is everywhere in this world and I defy any of you to turn away 1M if it meant the difference to your children once you are gone. Leaving 2Million in Trust as opposed to 2K? Don’t be stupid! I know which I would choose. What the HELL is all this analysis about? (ANAL) being the operative word! It’s happening, deal with it. Let the lady die in peace and in the way she has chosen. She is a good person. Surely our FINAL dying wish should be respected. Pray for her, for in a very short while, the faces of those beautiful boys will be the saddest they have ever been in their short lives. Imagine being told at that age… “Your mummy has gone away” That beautiful, funny, vibrant and YES, intelligent young woman with a massive zest for life and a an unfailing love for her boys and family. Age 27. It hurts so much that we can do nothing to help. So what we CAN do, we SHOULD do. Respect her name, who she is and what she managed to achieve. Jade Goody, a beautiful soul, warts and all, honest and open and hurt no one. This is how I will remember her. You guys do what you like, but leave her alone. God Bless you Jade. x

It doesn’t really matter what you think of Jade or the press, we are all talking about cancer, lots of people have had tests since this story broke, it can only be a good thing. Anyone with a heart is going to feel sorry for this woman and her family, but i also feel it’s time the papers stopped putting it on the front page everyday.

Emanuela Magro – if she had not ignored the results she might well have had many more years with her children, rather than being selfish and ignoring them. Instead she wanted her time in the spot light, by the way do you think she is a racist following her comments in BB,
