Car parts jobs safeguarded
Wednesday 18th March 2009, 11:49AM GMT.
More than 120 jobs have been safeguarded in Mid Wales after a vehicle parts manufacturer decided to close its Telford branch and transfer work across the border.
Shimizu Industry UK will close its plant in Hortonwood.
The branch employs 124 people but all its business will be transferred to the company’s Welshpool factory, where 125 workers are based.
The company, which makes injection-moulded plastic parts for the automotive industry for customers such as Honda, Toyota, Land Rover and Jaguar, said “significant” job losses were expected.
Glyn Davies, Tory pro- spective parliamentary candidate for Montgom- eryshire, said: “I am pleased the jobs in Welshpool have been safeguarded as such, but there is no reason to celebrate because a lot of people from Telford look set to lose their jobs.”
A statement from the firm blamed the economic crisis for the downturn in orders.
It said: “Employees of Shimizu Telford and Welshpool plants have been on short time working since October 2008 in a bid to try and reduce overheads and minimise the risk of redundancies.
“However, significant losses from ongoing reduced orders can no longer be sustained and major restructuring is necessary in order for the company to survive.”
Lembit Opik, Montgomeryshire MP, said: “It is great the Welshpool plant has been saved this time, but my thoughts are also with those in Telford.”
