oswestry-aerial-shotWork on Oswestry’s new £7 million leisure centre is set to get under way next week.

Oswestry Borough Council has confirmed work will commence on March 23, with an official sod-cutting ceremony on Friday.

Oz Park will boast a 25m pool, learner pool, sports halls, fitness suite and cafe.

It will replace facilities at the College Road site, which were built more than 40 years ago.

Steve Gray, council corporate property manager, said Frank Galliers, contractors, will start work on March 23.

The leisure centre is seen as a “legacy” of Oswestry Borough Council, which ceases to be on April 1 when a new unitary Shropshire Council takes over.

The planning of the scheme was put together by the borough council, although the scheme will be managed by Shropshire Council.

The development is due to be completed by 2010.
