Boy arrested after pupil taken to hospital

Tuesday 17th March 2009, 1:00PM GMT.

A Shropshire schoolboy was taken to hospital after being wounded in an incident at a county school.

One teenage boy was arrested by police after officers were called to the Bridgnorth Endowed School yesterday.

The injured boy, who is believed to be a Year Eight pupil, suffered a puncture wound to his back, but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

School bosses and police have launched an investigation into the incident, which happened yesterday afternoon.

Maria Hawkaluk, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: “Police were called to an alleged incident at Bridgnorth Endowed School at 1.30pm yesterday.

“A boy was taken to hospital with a puncture wound to his back. At this stage the injuries are not believed to be serious. A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the alleged incident.

“He was interviewed at Shrewsbury Police Station last night and has been released on bail pending further inquiries.”

Headteacher Phil Loveday said he could not comment but Robin Chowdhuri, a spokesman for Shropshire County Council, confirmed that an incident had taken place at the school.

He said: “An alleged incident took place at Bridgnorth Endowed School yesterday involving two pupils. This has involved one child being hospitalised.

“We can not comment any further until police have undertaken their investigation.

“Our thoughts are with the injured child, and his family, and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“The local authority is working closely with the school to ensure they are fully supported at this time.”

Suzie Fothergill, a spokeswoman from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, said they were not called to the school. It is believed that the child was taken to hospital independently.

Parents of youngsters at the school have expressed their shock.

One mother said her son had returned home yesterday and told her a youngster had been stabbed in the top of his back.
