Health bosses pay out thousands
Tuesday 17th March 2009, 12:25PM GMT.
Health bosses in Powys have been forced to fork out thousands of pounds due to staff injuries in recent years.
But the Powys Local Health Board (LHB) said the £158,000 it has spent in the last three years was relatively low compared to the rest of Wales.
Powys LHB was responding to Welsh Liberal Democrats who have obtained figures which they claim showed more than 20,000 injuries have been sustained by staff across the NHS in Wales over the last three years, costing at least £16 million.
Peter Black AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat health spokesman, urged the Government to invest in health and safety issues.
He said: “When compared to the annual spend on buildings in the NHS estate the bill to rectify these problems is small. It is just a matter of political will.”
Pat Tempest, Powys LHB planning and corporate services manager, said: “The number of serious incidents resulting in a claim has remained the same year on year, and the increase in reported incidents since 2006 is largely the result of much easier reporting mechanisms, as well as the inclusion of the business services centre – an all Wales function – in Powys LHB’s reporting systems.
“We have an average of two-and-a-half personal injury claims a year, which, on a per capita staffing level, puts us towards the ‘safer’ end of the Wales picture.”
