Vodafone in new masts plan
Monday 16th March 2009, 3:01PM GMT.
Mobile phone giant Vodafone has launched a consultation over plans to site a further two masts in Shrewsbury – on top of another five it is already proposing for the town.
The firm has now informed councillors that it wants to consult over sites in Barker Street, adjacent to the Tannery car park, and Longden Road near the Red Barn pub.
Vodafone is currently consulting over proposed masts in Oteley Road, near the Meole Brace Island; Racecourse Crescent at the junction with Robertson Way; and Monkmoor Road at the junction with Clive Road.
The firm is due to start work soon on a mast in Copthorne Road while it is also appealing a decision to refuse planning permission for a mast in Bank Farm Road, Radbrook.
Councillor Peter Nutting, leader of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, warned that not enough was known about the potential health risks associated with the structures.
He said: “It’s becoming a serious problem at the moment that Vodafone want to place masts in residential areas and they don’t seem to use much discretion about where they pick to put them.”
Dr Ilana Clark, spokeswoman for Vodafone, said: “The proposed Vodafone radio base stations are required to improve network coverage to our customers in the area.”
