Simpson: “We still believe”

Shrewsbury Town today issued a “we believe” promotion message after revitalising their dream of playing League One football next season.
Town appeared destined for another demoralising defeat on the road as they trailed play-off chasing Gillingham 2-0 with 12 minutes remaining on Saturday.
But a late Grant Holt brace gave Paul Simpson’s side a huge lift – and manager and players alike are now hoping that could prove a season-turning moment.
“We have rallied around and spoken to the players about the mental strength and their belief in each other, and I think that came through on Saturday,” said Simpson.
“We asked them the question last week if they believe that they are good enough.
“Every single one of them has said they do believe they are good enough and that we have got enough ability in there.
“Unfortunately, for long periods of the season – particularly away from home – we haven’t shown that.
“But the talks we have been having with everybody seem to be getting into their heads and we seem to be getting an understanding of what’s at stake and what’s to go for.
“If we keep going at it like we did Saturday, and cut out the silly little mistakes, who knows what can happen. There was a real belief and a real strength of character
“It could be a massive point if we do it right over these next run of League Two games.”
Simpson also revealed his thinking behind gathering all his players and staff for a post-match huddle on the Gillingham pitch immediately after the final whistle.
“I wanted to get everybody together,” added the Shrewsbury boss.
“In a changing room it is very tight and people are doing other things.
“I wanted to tell them how well I thought they had done and how proud I was of the way they reacted to a real kick in the guts for both of their goals.”
Goal-scoring hero Holt believes the fightback illustrated the togetherness within the squad.
“It’s nice to see the belief that the team can get back in the game,” said the striker, who now has 26 goals to his name.
“Many times we have gone under, as we did at Luton. We knew as a squad how big Saturday was.
“If we went to Gillingham and allowed them to get three points, the away form would have continued and it would have been a negative.
“But it’s a massive point, it shows what a team spirit there is and I’m delighted for everybody.”

We were unlucky not to take all three points on Saturday and promotion is very much within our grasp.
