Second away win still eludes Town

shrewsnewlogotm5A second league away win of the season still eludes Town, but there were many positives to take from the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Gillingham, writes Shrewsbury blogger James Pugh.

Going 2-0 down away from home, you could have almost forgiven the team if they had let their heads drop and accepted defeat.

But Town kept playing and showed belief they they could still get something from the game and when Holt scored in the last few minutes, a draw was the least we deserved.

Overall the performance was one of the best we have shown away all season, even more so against one of the form sides in the division.

If we can show the kind of character and performance from now until the end of the season, promotion is still a real possibility.

And what would we have done without Holt this season? I know I have said it before, but without his goals we would have been a mid-table team with nothing to play for.

People have criticised him for not getting enough goals from open play and that he has missed some good chances, especially recently.

But you cannot fault his work ethic and talent, and no one would argue that it wasn’t money well spent by Simpson.

Earlier in the week Town drew 0-0 with Aldershot – a team which has been leaking a lot of goals recently and whose keeper did not look very convincing.

A point away from home is not the end of the world, but it’s a team who you would like to think we could have beaten if we had shown more ambition. At least we kept a clean sheet!

After our two latest away games I still don’t think playing one up front is working and think it shows the opposition that we are a negative side.

In his short time at the club Ashikodi has show he has got something about him and I think we should give him a good run in the first team.

Playing one up front makes us hard to beat, but if we want to end our poor away run, we need to start playing two strikers.

Also it would allow Holt to get in the right areas more often rather than drop in midfield to pick up the ball.

Next up it’s a very winnable home tie against Morecambe where we will come up against our former players Drummond and Artell.

This season when we have come up against our former players they have played very well against us which is often the case with all teams.

After that it’s the very exciting away trip to Wycombe which will be shown live on Sky and could be our last chance to push for an automatic promotion spot.

A repeat of our 7-0 win in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy may be out of the question, but I am sure fans would accept a scrappy 1-0 victory.
