Two men were rescued from an island in the river near Bridgnorth after their canoe capsized.
Emergency crews were called to the River Severn near Hampton Loade after the alarm was raised by a passerby who saw the pair getting into difficulty yesterday about 5.40pm.
The men had managed to scramble to an island, know locally as Pitts Island, where they waited for help.
The two men, who are believed to be experienced canoeists, were rescued by firefighters. Both were uninjured.
A fire service spokesman said that when they arrived on the island the men had lit a fire, which is believed to have been noticed by the passerby.
Maria Hawkaluk, Shrewsbury police spokesman, said: “Police were called at about 5.40pm yesterday by a member of the public who reported that two men were stranded in the River Severn after a problem with their boat.”
