The 44-year-old man was airlifted to hospital following the accident on the A489 road between Penegoes and Cemmaes, near Machynlleth, on Saturday at 7pm.

Constable Hilton Jones, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said the cyclist had been hit by a Transit van towing a trailer.

He said: “He sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he needed emergency treatment for multiple injuries.

“The driver of the van was unhurt, although treated for shock at the scene.”

Elsewhere, two people escaped with minor injuries after their cars collided on a busy Powys road about 15 minutes earlier.

Emergency services were called to the A489 at Church Stoke at about 6.45pm.

A Mid and West Wales Fire spokesman said: “The accident involved two cars, but no-one was trapped. The two casualties were treated at the scene by ambulance personnel and our crew remained in attendance until everything was safe.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman said two casualties had been treated for minor injuries.
