Rich-list Town talk ‘just not true’

Saturday 14th March 2009, 12:55PM GMT.

Shrewsbury Town manager Paul SimpsonPaul Simpson has insisted suggestions Shrewsbury Town have been the “moneybags” club of League Two in 2008-9 are wide of the mark.

Town splashed out £170,000 for Grant Holt for Nottingham Forest at the start of the season and paid Macclesfield an undisclosed fee for Terry Dunfield in January.

But Simpson insists Town have only increased their budget slightly on last season as they pursue their promotion dream.

“I’ve been surprised with how people have read into that,” said Simpson of his squad rebuilding over the season.

“Everybody thinks we are a moneybags club and we’re not.

“We are actually not that much over our budget from last season. There has only been a slight difference because of the way we have shuffled it around and moved some out.

“It’s been very good that we have been able to do that. I still want to do a lot more and change it around.

“Next season could be difficult because there are going to be restrictions on what you are allowed to spend on wages and it will make it very interesting, but I’m really pleased with the way that it has gone.”

Town’s reserve team trip to Port Vale which was scheduled for Monday will now be played at 2pm on Wednesday.
