Police vow as soccer yob bans rise

Saturday 14th March 2009, 11:00AM GMT.

PoliceNearly 50 people across Shropshire currently have football banning orders imposed on them after they were involved in trouble relating to soccer matches.

And police today warned anybody intent on causing problems at matches in or out of the county would be caught.

In Shropshire Division 25 people are subject to a ban, with 21 running in Telford Division. Most bans relate to trouble outside the county.

The orders mean people have to stay away from their team’s ground and certain areas – such as the town centre – on match days, and hand in their passport when England play away.

Detective Constable Alan Roberts, football intelligence officer for Shropshire Division, said: “Since moving from the Gay Meadow to the new stadium we have had no serious disorder either in or around the ground or in the town centre.”

In Telford 12 bans were imposed after matches involving AFC Telford United.

Acting Detective Sergeant Paul Armstrong, football intelligence officer at Telford, said police would not tolerate this type of anti-social behaviour.

The reason that there have been no banning orders in Shrewsbury is because of their success in banning so many of their hooligans in previous seasons. BTW This was not helped by the critical reporting by the Shropshire Star reporters at the time and quite honestly they deserved their bans from the ProStar!

These bans should also be seen as a positive sign that the co-ordinated efforts of Shrewsbury Town, Telford AFC, and the local police are actually working. In excess of 50,000 fans will have visited the New Bucks Head this season, the fact that there has only been 12 orders (presumably some of these were for trouble at away fixtures?) should be seen as a triumph for the proactive AFC Telford board.

Unfortunately the very minor incidents at the Bucks Head that do get reported are inevitably blown out of all proportion by the local press.

IMO what the police do need to tighten up on is their control of away suport for ALL clubs (i.e. Wolves fans masquerading as Telford supporters in fixtures at Kettering).

Both the Bucks Head and the Prostar entertain many family groups of supporters every home game. I do hope that the consistent and unnecessary negative reporting will not change this!

Well… we are a club run by its fans for its fans and the local community. We dont need rich suger daddies to keep bailing our club out and we dont need your negative support in our ground.

Well said mick I agree 1000%

Telford is a non league side yet regularly has crowds that rival certain local league sides ;)

i.e. 3600 against Southend this season

And there really is no trouble at the Bucks Head worth reporting IMO.

I for one am proud of what my ‘local’ club have achieved, we really dont need the support of any snidey wolves supporters TYVM
