Decision on rival schemes deferred

A meeting to decide the fate of three major supermarket proposals in Oswestry has been shelved.
The meeting was due to be held on March 25 so councillors could determine which of the three rival bids would get the go-ahead before Oswestry Borough Council is superceded by Shropshire Council, the new county-wide unitary authority.
However borough council planning chiefs say outstanding information such as traffic issues mean the decision will now have to be taken by the new authority, which takes over from April 1.
Developer Liberty Mercian wants to build on Oswestry’s livestock market, timber firm Richard Burbidge wants to build a store in Whittington Road and JT Hughes and Guttercrest want to build across their sites in Victoria Road.
The borough council has already said only one will get the go-ahead and a special panel was set up in preparation for when a decision could be made.
However Councillor David Lloyd, borough council leader, said: “It is disappointing it couldn’t be considered by the present council by the end of the month, but it wasn’t realistic.
“I am quite happy there is a transitional arrangement already planned on the countdown to this council to ensure that as and when the applications are finally complete and advice is available, things can proceed.”
