Be ruthless, says Simpson

paul-simpson5-sad1Shrewsbury have been urged to ‘be ruthless’ as they attempt to halt Gillingham’s hot-streak in tomorrow’s League Two promotion shoot-out.

Town make the long trip to Kent on the cusp of the play-off positions and knowing victory will take them above Gillingham, who are fifth, on goal difference.

Manager Paul Simpson was heartened by his side’s performance in the goalless draw at Aldershot on Tuesday, but is seeking a greater cutting edge in the final third.

“There were a lot of good things to come out of Tuesday and we now want to be more ruthless and clinical when we get into the final third,” said the Town boss.

“Gillingham are going well. They have won four of their last five and when you are on a run like that, you get things like they got on Tuesday when they scored a 92nd minute penalty (to beat Darlington 1-0).

“But it’s about what we do. Gillingham will be looking and thinking they have got a good chance of automatic promotion. We can go above them tomorrow so why shouldn’t we be thinking that?

“Nothing is going to be decided by the outcome tomorrow but whoever gets the result will get a big boost.”

Simpson today reported no fresh injury problems from the trip to Aldershot so must decide whether to stick with the 4-5-1 formation he adopted there.

Any switch back to the more conventional 4-4-2 could see a recall for Moses Ashikodi.

Dave Hibbert played an hour of the reserves 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday but is still unlikely to be considered for a first-team start as he continues to recover from a foot problem.

Kevin McIntyre and Mike Jackson remain the club’s two long-term injury victims, but Simpson remains hopeful the pair will play some part in the remainder of the season.
