FTSE 100 slides in early tradingThe FTSE 100 slid 35.88 points in early trading to 3,657.93, as mining groups continued to weigh on the index.

A fall in copper prices sent shares in Antofagasta down by 5.6 per cent, while Vedanta Resources fell by 4.48 per cent and Xstrata was down by 4.81 per cent.

However, Travel firms have also seen big losses. Thomas Cook led the decline, falling 13.69 per cent by 09:22 GMT, while rival TUI Travel fell 8.95 per cent.

Property and insurance stocks were still rising up the index, however, with Hammerson making the biggest gains.

The residential and commercial property group jumped 3.35 per cent to 239.25p, while insurer Old Mutual was up by 3.24 per cent and Admiral rose 2.58 per cent.

Overnight, US markets rose for a second day despite sharp falls in the morning session.

The Dow Jones was up by 0.06 per cent and the S&P 500 rose by 0.24 per cent.
