Driver dies at scene of crash

A man has died after a three-car smash on a Shropshire country road today.

The victim, who has not been named, died at the scene of the crash on the B5063 near Longdon on Tern.

Emergency services were called to the scene about half a mile north of the village at 7.45am.

The crash saw a car left on its roof through a hedge and two other vehicles blocking the road.

Constable Peter Simmonds, of Telford police, said: “Police are investigating the circumstances.”

Kevin Maddox, watch manager at Wellington fire station, said crews released one male in his 30s from a silver car, who was airlifted to hospital with chest and lower limb injuries.

He said the male driver of the red car was pronounced dead at the scene

Mr Maddox said: “There was a lady in her 40s and a boy in his late teens in the blue car and they seemed fine.

“We had reports one vehicle was smoking, but I think it was steam from the burst radiator cooling system.”

Meanwhile, a live electricity cable was left lying across a road in Chelmarsh, near Bridgnorth, after a car hit a telegraph pole.

Fire crews and police were called to the scene at 10.25pm yesterday and found the cable had been brought down in the road.

Emergency services waited for an hour until Central Networks arrived to deal with the incident.

Three homes were left without power for a short time.
