Extra cash for £10.6m visitor centre

A £10.6 million scheme to transform Shrewsbury’s Music Hall into a visitor heritage centre will go ahead after managers finally secured a further £1 million in lottery funding.
The grant is from the Heritage Lottery Fund – which has already pledged £1 million.
It means plans to turn the historic building into a “Shropshire portal” can become a reality by 2011.
Project team manager Dominic Wallis today said work will begin on Monday to strip out the Music Hall in the Square.
He said: “This means that the project can be delivered, it has not got extensive amounts of money, but it has got enough.
“We still need further assistance from Advantage West Midlands to make the project really special but we have a cost plan that is based on delivering a museum, gallery and information centre and that is now achievable.”
Mr Wallis said the design team behind the scheme hope it will win awards when created. Extra money will be needed to realise the ambitions and expectations of the people behind the project.
The vision to turn the building into “A Shropshire Portal in the Old Music Hall” sees York paving leading visitors through the building into a piazza housing a 100-seater cafe and bistro.
It would be used to showpiece historical collections from Shropshire and incorporate shops selling goods about Shropshire or made in the county. It will have an education and activity suite for youngsters.
