Smith’s dilemma
Tuesday 10th March 2009, 11:43AM GMT.
Boss Rob Smith is facing a selection conundrum ahead of AFC Telford United’s trip to Vauxhall Motors tonight as their fixture pile-up begins to bite.
The Bucks are desperate for a win this evening as they bid to stay in the Blue Square North title hunt.
But Smith is also concerned with making sure he has a strong side available for the visit of York City in the first leg of the FA Trophy semi-final on Saturday, as they look towards Wembley.
“It’s a difficult one – we have got to have one eye on Saturday because of the importance of that game and because I will only have 13 or 14 players available,” said Smith.
“The wise thing would be to rest some of our key players, but we’re still fighting for the league as well and we need the points tonight.
“I really rate Vauxhall as well – they’re flying again after winning on Saturday (a 2-0 victory over Burscough) and we certainly can’t take them for granted.
“I still expect us to be right at it from the start and everyone should be champing at the bit because there are places up for grabs for Saturday.”
Smith’s options tonight are depleted by the absence of joint top scorer Terry Fearns, who will not be considered following his arrest in Liverpool last week.
The Telford boss hopes to field Danny Carey-Bertram and Mark Danks as his front two, but has doubts over both.
Carey-Bertram is struggling with a niggling ankle injury while Danks broke his nose against King’s Lynn on Saturday and has suffered concussion since the weekend.
Andy Brown, the remaining out-and-out striker in Smith’s squad, will definitely not be risked tonight in order to give him the best possible chance of being ready to line-up against York.
Right-back Lee Vaughan is also out as he starts a three-match suspension following his red card at Southport.
But his absence is covered by the return to the squad of Martyn Naylor, who has recovered from a broken cheekbone.
