Talks over windfarm lorries
Monday 9th March 2009, 1:11PM GMT.
Residents in Powys living along potential windfarm supply routes are being urged to attend a public meeting tomorrow.
Welshpool Town Council fears thousands of lorries carrying turbines to windfarms being built in Powys could have a “severe impact” on historic buildings.
A major roundabout on Welshpool’s bypass would also have to be destroyed to allow the massive turbine components to travel through the town.
Fears have been raised that windfarm developers will have to carry turbine parts, including blades of up to 45 metres long, through the town to reach various proposed windfarm sites.
Robert Robinson, council clerk, said a meeting to find out about the people’s opinion would take place in Welshpool town hall’s assembly room at 7pm tomorrow.
He said: “Welshpool has a lot of historic buildings that don’t sit on concrete foundations.
“These lorries are expected to be up to 53 metres long and could cause a lot of structural damage to these buildings.
“We have therefore organised a public meeting and hope hundreds of residents will attend.”
Mr Robinson said the number of lorries carrying turbine components had risen from 20 extra lorries expected per day through the town, supplying parts to the farms as they are built, to a 114 per day.
