Moses in promotion bid
Monday 9th March 2009, 12:32PM GMT.
Moses Ashikodi today reflected on his first goal for Shrewsbury Town and declared: “There’s more to come from me and the team.”
Ashikodi scored Town’s first goal in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Notts County which kept Paul Simpson’s side in the promotion picture.
The 21-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of the season initially, and has revealed he is hoping to do enough to earn a longer stay at the Prostar Stadium.
“Everything about the club is great so I would love to stay long term,” said striker
“I have to do well here and impress the gaffer and then it’s up to him. But I have to score goals and work hard for the team.
“I have to develop my career and hopefully I can do it with Shrewsbury.
“I’ve been dying to get the first goal so I can breath a bit easier now and look for more.
“I hadn’t played a game for a long time before the Macclesfield game so I am lacking fitness but that will come.
“There’s more to come from me and definitely more to come from the team.”
Saturday’s victory left Shrewsbury in eighth place in League Two, but Ashikodi insists automatic promotion remains the target.
“There’s only three points from us to third and we still have to play teams around us so it’s in our own hands,” he added.
“We can’t wait for other teams. Let’s do it ourselves.”
Manager Paul Simpson was understandably delighted with three points – and hailed the role the supporters played in a priceless victory.
“It’s a good win for us and will give everyone a lift and we have to give the fans credit because they stuck with us as well,” said the Town boss.
“After Tuesday (the 1-1 draw with Exeter), it would have been easy for the fans to turn when we went a goal down but they were fantastic and stayed with us.
“The ones that turned up on Saturday have been part of what will hopefully prove a very important three points.”
- Shrewsbury’s youngsters take centre stage tonight when they entertain Rushden & Diamonds in the semi-finals of the Midland Youth Cup at the Prostar Stadium. Kick-off is 7pm and admission is £3 adults and £1 concessions.

Moses – it’s a good biblical name for a team that really needs to start praying!
